    Hosting Recommendations

Does anyone have any recommendations for web hosting companies. I have been using Drummond Media but they seem to have changed recently - I had a few difficulties setting up Actinic originally but I used to be able to speak to people on the phone - now its all email and the phone messages are pretty dismissive. I can understand this for commodity webhosting, but I do pay a bit more than that.

Add to that the fact that a problem with their servers took me offline for a week early this year and the costs have just gone up, and I think its time to look at another supplier.

So, who do you use and what do they cost, can you recommend them (or not) or who do you believe are good ?

    Cheers

We have "gone through" SIX of the so called "leading" host providers in the UK, with a specific need for hosting Actinic successfully.

The only one that actually does what it says, with a 1st class phone, email, epanel support desk is Hostway UK (formally Iarna).

We have proved (and they accept) to some of our previous host providers that their setup for Actinic is wrong, and they still dont change anything.

Be very careful, as you can put a lot of effort and time into the wrong ISP's as we did, all for nothing.

Sorry for (slightly) hijacking this thread, but we a re having big problems trying to configure Actinic Catalog for use on a Hostway Windows package, our problem seems to come from configuring the SSL part of the settings.

We use the shared SSL that comes with our package, do you?

      Thanks

      Andrew

                Hi Andrew

We dont use the shared SSL as we use Worldpay as our payment provider.

If you speak with Hostway techical and explain the problem, i am confident that you will get the problem resolved.

What is the problem out of interest.....i'll see if we can help anyhow ??

                Regards

                  Hi Mike,

The problem is that when you go to the checkout phase, you loose all the formatting of the Cascading Style Sheet and no images are displayed, I am in contact with Hostway but it is a slow process.

I think it something do with the way they configure the shared SSL and Actinic needing to know the path from the SSL cgi-bin to the acatalog directory.

I should say going back to you earlier comments, although we are having problems at the moment, we have had a very positive eperience dealing with Hostway with helpful support staff. In addition there pricing is very reasonable, especially the packages that include a shared SSL.

                  Cheers

You could try absolute paths, i.e

                    http://www.site.com/images/eg.gif
                    instead of
                    /images/eg.gif
                    and
                    http://www.site.com/mystyles.css
                    instead of
                    /mystyles.css

The only problem is that you might get a warning popup in the browser saying that elements of the page are unsecure....do you wish to continue.

                    Just a thought.

                          Thanks for the reply.

I am currently waiting on Actinic Support coming back with some answers, but this seems to be liking pulling teeth (which is v disappointing).

According to support the problem relates to my SSL URL for the acatalog directory, my concern being that although I could use absolute paths for the images, buttons and CSS, the incorrect SSL URL may cause a prolbem with Actinic's functionality.

Your suggestion did work, but I don't know enough about the functionality to know whether it would be unaffected.

                          Thanks

We have been providing Actinic hosting for many years, with Actinic specific hosting accounts offered from within our www.4surehosting.co.uk site.

If you email us offlist, then we can send you a list of some of the Actinic sites we host for which you can then take a look yourself etc etc.

                            All the best......

I transfered to pinbrook at the back end of May after having 6 months of problems with internetters, who are apparently a gold partner of Actinic, but they refused to look deeper at resolving the issues. Very poor service?

Anyway every thing is fine with Pinbrook and suddenly the phone is quite. no more i cant process my order. We have had a couple of hicups but hey who can predict that a router is going to fall over? And even this was only for a few hours while things were transfered or changed

If you need anymore help, just mail me

                              Cheers
