How can I check what is causing slowness?

Are there any utilities for checking the speed of web pages - checkout pages are extremely slow. Our hosting providers have moved our site onto a newer server and advise its not a problem with the server.

I am considering changing hosting services but would also like to establish if there could be any other reasons for the extreme slowness.

They look pretty fast to me. Have you checked it on any other pcs other than yours or have you had complaints

Rob, there are many website performance tools available to report back on many aspects of a web site and indeed the web server performance and speed.
e.g.

When you say "extreme slowness" can you quanitify your statement? i.e. are certain pages within checkout loading between 1-5 secs, or 10-15 secs etc

Ruralweb - thanks for your speedy reply. We have had complaints and fortunatley people phoning to complete the orders. Although I am testing here on the same PCs that I used before the hosting company advised they had changed servers if that makes any difference?

I have just test on two different machines with the same product and get the following results:

Add to basket:
Machine 1 - 1m40s
Machine 2 - 1m10s

Go To Checkout:
Machine 1 - 40s
Machine 2 - 1m20s

Checkout Step 2:
Machine 1 - 30s
Machine 2 - 25s

Checkout Step 3:
Machine 1 - 35s
Machine2 - 40s

Thus 3-4 mins just to get through to the bit where customer enters their card details.

Those figures are certainly not what I am seeing - checkout is almost instant for me.

perhaps a few more people can check for you as well.

You could improve things like stripping the pages to the bare minimum by removing the navigation etc which would help.

Very fast here too - add to basket almost instantaneous, checkout 2 secs at most.

You need to get hold of some server monitoring software that will ping the server at regular intervals to determine any transient problems - although if you were testing checkout at the same time as us and getting slow results when we were getting fast then it may just be down to isp performance

Have you tried disabling the Sayu tracking - just comment the relevant code out temporarily?

Mark H - Thanks for testing. Not tried to take out anything as yet - will give it a go.

The strange thing is that the product pages etc are fast on both my machines - just the checkout process is very slow. Similarly reported by customers.

I've checked on several machines across 3 ISP's (work and home) and can find no performance issue.

How recently was the site moved? Are you 100% sure you're viewing the new hosting area? Perhaps there is a DNS propagation issue?
