    FTP errors

Hi, I'm trying to move my catalog from my 1and1 root space to my 1and1 domain space so am changing ftp details.

However, the ftp details I've put in give me various responses:

    unable to establish ftp connection
    220 ftp server ready
500 user command unable to establish ftp connection

and then another which just says invalid password - however when I FTP using a client with the same password I get in ok.

Has anyone else come across this or got any ideas?

    Thanks
    Michelle

Have you pointed your domain to the new root directory in the 1and1 control panel?

Hi, I was wondering if it might be anything to do with my network settings, although I can't see how.

        These are my 1and1 settings:

        HTTPPROXYMODE 0
        HTTPPROXYADDRESS
        HTTPPROXYPORT 80
        HTTPPROXYUSER
        HTTPPROXYPASSWORD
        FTPPROXYMODE 0
        FTPPROXYADDRESS
        FTPPROXYPORT 21
        FTPPROXYUSER
        FTPPROXYPASSWORD
        SCRIPTID 2
        SCRIPTEXT .pl
        SMTPHOST auth.smtp.oneandone.co.uk
        WEBSITEURL http://www.domain.co.uk/
        IGNOREPASSIVEERRORS true
        USERELATIVECGIURLS false
        PATHTOPERL /usr/bin/perl
        USEENHANCEFTP false
        SSLCATALOGURL https://sslrelay.com/secure.domain.co.uk/acatalog/
        SSLCGIBINURL https://sslrelay.com/secure.domain.co.uk/cgi-bin/
        SSLPATHFROMCGITOCATALOG ../acatalog/
        SSLCODEBASE ./
        SSLFTPHOST ftp.winacabin.co.uk
        SSLFTPUSERNAME xxxxxxxxxx
        SSLFTPPASSWORD xxxxxxxxxx
        SSLPATHTOCGIBIN /cgi-bin/
        SSLUSEPASSIVEFTP true
        CATALOGURL http://www.domain.co.uk/acatalog/
        CGIBINURL http://www.domain.co.uk/cgi-bin/
        PATHFROMCGITOCATALOG ../acatalog/
        CODEBASE ./
        FTPHOST ftp.domain.co.uk
        FTPUSERNAME xxxxxxxxxx
        FTPPASSWORD xxxxxxxxxx
        PATHTOCGIBIN /cgi-bin/
        USEPASSIVEFTP true
        FTPPATHFROMCGITOCATALOG
Any ideas anyone?!! 1and1 say it's an actinic problem (of course) because a normal FTP client works ok

        Many thanks

When you ftp with an ftp client do you only see the root as from the shop directory?
In other words have you set up the ftp user to be to the shop directory?
Do the network settings pass without error?

If you pointed both your ftp user and domain to the same location in your webspace then the original ftp settings should still work. The exception may be the SSL. You could also try removing SSL for a moment to see if it helps.

Did you also create cgi-bin and acatalog folders in the new domain root and of course set the permissions?

Many thanks Duncan for your reply.

            >When you ftp with an ftp client do you only see the root as from the shop directory?
In other words have you set up the ftp user to be to the shop directory?
            Yes.

            >Do the network settings pass without error?
I don't actually get that far - they fail straight away at the FTP, so I've not found a way to verify them.

            >If you pointed both your ftp user and domain to the same location in your webspace then the original ftp settings should still work.
Unfortunately that is what I have done yet they don't work!

            >The exception may be the SSL. You could also try removing SSL for a moment to see if it helps.
I have tried that, it doesn't make any difference - still fails at testing the FTP connection

            >Did you also create cgi-bin and acatalog folders in the new domain root and of course set the permissions?
Yes, and I've set the permissions to 777 on 1and1's instructions.

            Many thanks again

              To get this working it's really a case of finding out what's going wrong and then fixing it. I can't see anything obviously wrong with your settings so here's what I'd do;

              1. Clear all your SSL settings and then disable SSL. This way we can concentrate on the main settings.

              2. My 1and1 ftp host setting doesn't have the 'ftp.' bit at the beginning. It probably doesn't make any difference but you could try removing that bit.

              3. If you have passive ftp enabled, then try disabling it (and vice Versa)

              4. Check that your PC firewall is allowing actinic internet access.

If it still doesn't work then we'll have to look at it again.

              Mike

Many thanks for the ideas Mike. I tried all of them, I was actually hopeful the firewall idea might be it yet turned it off and it made no difference.

Error I'm getting consistently now is still:

"Unable to connect to the FTP server because the specified username or
                password is incorrect."

                Many thanks again

Maybe actinic has somehow corrupted the username or password.

You could delete them both, compact the database and then re-enter them from a fresh source. Just in case.

Hi Mike, many many thanks for your help. Sorry for my delay; we've been exhibiting so I couldn't get to try it until now.

Anyway, compacting the database did it!! I now have my site on my proper /shop directory and basic tests show it works!

                    Many thanks again
