    PC has gone down :(

Can anyone please suggest any help?

I have spent a good 48 hrs now updating the site, like a complete IDIOT I have not backed it up for a few weeks . . .

the PC will not start at all and I cannot put the snapshot into the laptop with Actinic on as it is out of date.

I cannot get to the on-line version without altering the state back to how it was and of course, I'll lose the orders etc so i can't even stop folks purchasing or temporarily switch it off while I fix this which is very worrying.

Looks like my Xmas sales are skrewed now

Any suggestions please - I feel like a complete fool.

    Thanks

You will need to try the hard drive in another pc i expect and see whether it is that corrupted or not. There are various drive recovery software services out there also which you may be able to use if it is borked.

Alternatively, try booting from the Windows install CD. If that works, you may be able to recover files from the hard drive (if its still working).

I know this doesn't help you now, and I really hope you get your PC sorted, but I really would recomend a Drobo (search on Google). It is a god-send and I just don't think about backups anymore. Good Luck!

if you really want to turn off online ordering whilst you fix the Pc, the simplest method is to change permissions on the cgi-bin. (change to 644) this will leave the site intact, but screw the scripts so people cant buy (or search). Then when you are ready change permissions back to 755 and you are away again.

hope the pc is fixed soon, regarding back ups.
A simple cheap way is a usb memory stock, just get into the habbit of taking a snapshot at the end of every day onto it. Take it with you everywhere u go.

I like the video on this, makes it look very easy. Did you buy from the States?

It's dead simple. I got mine from Amazon (it may have been an affiliate). The Firewire option is by far the best. I do a *lot* of photography editing and need plenty of disk space and this just makes my backup workflow a cinch (or sinch, not sure how you spell that!).

Kevin - as much as I could watch Ms Lewis all day, I haven't worked out if this is different from a Network Attached Storage box with four mirrored drives (apart from the fact that it doesn't need to be LAN)?

Its Similar Mark - only there is zero configuration. You just slam the disks in and away you go. It works. If one of the disks fail, you just pull it out and either put a new one in or just carry on. Its great for me because I had about eight HDD just hanging around from different PCs and I popped four in. All different sizes and all different models....and it just worked. No configuration or raid issues at all. I should be on commission but I'm not - just a happy user. Even the great Scott Kelby uses one!

                      Hi all,

Well, it took a while but it was a damn-site easier than having to add ALL the edits I had made since October!

Disc booted off another PC as a second drive and was able to copy Site1 from the Actinic folder (phew!) so is it OK to simply replace the Site1 folder on my laptop which will give me the store as it was this morning b4 any new d-loads?

Can i then hit d-load Orders and have them come in OK as I am sure I have replaced the Site1 folder i the past for some reason and it worked OK without a snapshot being exported instead?

Cheers and I will look into the back-up issue!

Thank you for your help all.

PS, I did use the CGI permissons idea too as I thought it was better to have the site some-way there than not at all so thanks Jo for that suggestions.
