Most importantly though the type of stuff we sell means that we need to be able to check the order is complete and all items are in stock before the payment is processed
This is possible with a PSP.

I feel using a PSP makes your website & business look amateurish.
To some customers NOT using a PSP may be off-putting for security reasons, although the percentage of customers who understand the difference is probably quite small.

Fair point I suppose. As a kind-of-related story, I had an email from my Dad a few weeks ago telling me he had just bought something from a website and "Had I heard of this new technology?" - at which point he reproduced a bit of flowery text from said website that explained that the the website didn't have a 'padlock' (ie. SSL) because they had a new and special encryption system...etc etc.

My Dad has been around computers for 30 years is generally a pretty savvy guy regarding ecommerce etc - and yet he had belived this guff and typed in his card details without a backward glance. I put him straight, at which point he contacted the company concerned and spoke to the owner, who said 'well, actually, we just bought this company and have no idea who built the website or where the card details go to. We just know we don't get them". How scary is that? That is kind of why I'm not going to get too excited about theoretically contravening some new PCI requirements when I know we are already 95% of the way there and already way more secure than lots of websites out there. Obviously if Barclays tell us we have to change things then fair enough, but until that happens I'm probably not going to worry about it too much

I believe this is called "Pre-Auth" or "Pre-Authorisation", although it is not something we have needed to get involved with. A search of the forum for "Pre-Auth" should throw up a few threads
