    Upload problems

    Version 6.1.5.0.0.0EGRA

I was updating the site when the the transfer halted at A00021.cat then timed out. The web site stopped functioning and on investigation I found that the permissions to acatalog and cgi-bin had been changed to 555 (Unix host). I have reset these to 777 and 775 and now the website is running, but I still can't upload.

I have found that all files larger than 1456 bytes time out using ftp (I have tried 3 different ftp clients from 2 different sites with actinic and standard text files). My ISP says there is nothing wrong at their end.

Strangely A000.cat is exactly 1456 bytes, is this a coincidence or the cause? A00021.cat is the next file larger than this in the upload sequence, so the transfer sticks at this point.

    Baffled??

Sounds like Comms or router problems.

Try using a different internet connection (use dial-up if you have a modem, take PC to somewhere with a different one, string network cable to next door, etc).

Also, if you've another PC at this location try your upload tests from that.

      Thanks for the quick reply.
I have just tried using dial up with the same results. A000.cat gets uploaded but it now times out at A00013.cat which shows as 0 size on the host.

Try ticking the 'pasive ftp' box (or if already ticked, try unticking it).

The I can only suggest some areas to investigate.

            1. Give your web hosts a good kicking and tell them to stop mucking about. Permissions don't change all by themselves which means they have updated stuff and made a balls up somewhere.

            2. The kind of thing that can break ftp include:

a - Changing the default upload mode so that files can no longer be uploaded in ASCII.

b - changing the file ownership so that Actinic no longer has ownership / permisson to alter it's files (probably not likely as you say this problem occurs with other ftp programs).

            3. Try running a network test from Actinic and see if any failure messages appear.

Thanks for your suggestions Mike and Norman

I have come to the conclusion that there is something amiss at the ISP as I can upload the the site to a Webfusion VPS without any problems.

I've been kicking for a week, now its time to walk! Shame, I've been with them from the very early days of the Direct Connection, but hey, loyalty counts for nothing these days.
