I know this problem has been done to death but this problem occurred after i got my host to make my catalog page the root of my site, ie to open up on the catalog page.

Do any network settings need to be changed at the same time and could this be causing it? (I've already done the compacting and refreshing thing)

Also the images on the catalog pages are clickable and work ok but the store sections in the sidebars go to URL not found, hopefully just something simply fixed???

This is the cause of the problem, and hence the solution lies here as well.

Actinic requires ftp and http access to the cgi-bin and acatalog folder as defined in the network settings, and hence any server amendment that effects the access and paths to these two locations will have a relevant impact on Actinic's operation.

I would either ask your host to a) set things back to how they were or b) configure the hosting area AND your Actinic network settings to ensure both work together.
