Seperate stock for colour size

I have set up a colour attribute under my product but then realised that it pulls from the same stock figure i.e.

If I have 10 red jumpers and 10 blue jumpers the total stock for that product is 20.
Problem is that someone could order 20 blue jumpers.

Is there a way to have seperate stock items for both without creating seperate products so that way I can still have the colour attribute with a drop down list for all colour variations.

You'd have to make the components pull from Hidden products... so create red and blue as new products, set stock levels, then hide em... then when you do your components, make sure you set the permutations to pull the components' values from the hidden products... (if that makes sense)
