Problems trying to refresh - Aaaaargh!

Hello all you clever people. I am a complete idiot! My techy is in hospital and, frankly, I can barely turn my computer on without him!
I have encountered a problem with my Actinic site and am praying that one of you will be able to help me with it? If so, could you please remember you are talking to an imbecile who can follow "..press this, then press that..." very little more...
My problem is this. When I try to refresh my website, the little box pops up with "Check and send files" in the blue bit above the grey box as it normally does.
It quite happily goes through "Check Catalog", then "Checking HTML Pages", then "Checking search indices" but then it comes to "Reviewing files". In that section, it goes through "Checking word index", then "Checking Price Index" and, although the little blue bar shows the task is complete. it says "Creating remote directory structure" and then suddenly disappears??? It never gets to "Sending Base Files" or any further. My website is thus hopelessley out of date?
And this happens if I simply press the little up arrow or click on "Web" and then "Refresh Website"???
PLEASE guys, if you can tell me a simple fix that I might understand, I would be very, very grateful and send you my wife or my first born by Royal Mail....

Thanks Peblaco - for taking the time to reply to me and for keeping your suggestion simple enough for even me to understand!
Unfortunately, it didn't work - the refresh gave up in exactly the same place. Perhaps I should have said that it has been working properly for years until just recently, I started to do a refresh using the little Up button at the top of the screen, then cancelled it because I had another order come through. I may well have cancelled it at the point at which it's disappearing now but I can't be sure. Don't know if this has anything to do with it but again, I have cancelled a refresh before now with no problems???
      Any other (simple) suggestions please????

Oh Dear! I have tried changing the number from 1 to 2, turned off my broadband connection and rebooted it and changed the username and password with my hots and through "Advanced/Network Setup" but my update (or "Web/Refresh") still disappears when it gets to "Checking Search Indices - Creating Remote Directiry Structure".
I looked at the two threads you gave me Peblaco (thanks again) and that's where I got some of the things I tried. The only one I haven't done yet is one I couldn't understand - "FTP to the server and delete the existing cgi-bin directory, create a new one and then do a complete refresh". .
I know you will all soon get sick of me but if you think this instruction will work, could anybody take the time to explain to me what I'm supposed to be doing exactly? I know how to connect to the server to do a site backup - is that where I delete this cgi-bin thingy?
Please forgive me for asking but I don't want to do something stupid and find I'm out of business!
          Thanks again....

            OK. One last suggestion;

            - Tick the box that says 'enable passive ftp' if it isn't already ticked (or vice-versa) and see if that helps.

If it doesn't then it's time to try a few tests. the first of which is to run a network settings test and report back what the outcome is.

              Thanks for that Mike.
I ticked the little box I could find that had something to do with passive ftp's but it didn't make any difference so I thought I'd try the test you mentioned.
The only problem was that you didn't explain how to do the test so I pressed lots of buttons and things until it seemed to run some sort of test and told me I had an incorrect password. I got on to my web hosts and they told me they had upgraded their services or somethig and I needed to use the password they gave me to log in so that I could change it back.
Anyway, cut a LONG stoty short, it took forever the first time, but IT WORKS!!!
Thank you SO SO much! All you people are stars!
