Display of multiple choices for an attribute

I have a product that is ordered by size/colour with a unique reference number for each permutation. I have set up the product with one component (colour/size). The component has two attributes, one colour and one size. Each attribute has a few choices. I've then associated each permutation on the component with a hidden product for stock monitoring. Is this
the best way to do this?

Also, how do I change the display of the choice drop down lists for my product? At the moment the size and colour boxes are hard up against each other with no white space between and the headings and need moving. Is this a template change or is there some option I need to set to control this?

At the Product level, each Attribute has a "Separator" field where you can select how you'd like this item separated from the next. You probably have "User Defined" and no HTML in there.

If you want to set the look for the entire catalog then look at the templates in Advanced / Template Manager / Product Variants.
