Could not use '|'; file already in use

One of my sites is suddenly coming up with this error during download:

[Heading]ODBC Microsoft Access Driver Login Failure
[Error]Could not use '|'; file already in use
When I cancel that it says:

    [heading]OCC Plug-in
    [error]Cannot open the database
Make sure that 'Actiniccatalog7' is setup as a valid ODBC source
This is only happening on that one site, which hasn't been changed recently, and only when attempting to download an order/payment. The order did actually download after much cancelling of errors, and on the next attempt the payment downloaded as well with me cancelling all the errors.

Any idea what the heck that's all about?

It's doing it again (it stopped for a while), and on 2 sites now. I even got the same error on an upload. Any ideas on this one?

In the past this has been a sign that the database thinks another program has it open and is denying actinic access.

If this is unlikely to be the problem then I've seen a couple of suggested solutions:

      1. Compact the database.

      2. re-install actinic.

I can 'fix' this by renaming the mdb file, taking a copy, then renaming the copy as the original name. But then next time I run a download it works that time, but fails again the next time. It's now started spreading to other sites - but not all.

I don't want to have to reinstall actinic - that's a real PITA, especially with as many sites as I have, and especially as I think (from memory) it does something funny with the payment files (like reset them to default and take out all the mods).

Someone at actinic must have an idea of what might cause this to happen...?

hmmm, this may be related to the backups (some of the sites are set to backup every time actinic is exited). When I switched this to once a day and exited manually I came up with an error saying the backup couldn't be saved because the backup file was locked/in use... Presumably this error was not showing previously because use 1stop auto processing which was probably cancelling the error.

I'll report back later if this fixes the problem (although no idea why the backup files are starting to lock all of a sudden ), but it would explain why the problem ocurrs every time after I manually reset it...

Could you have recently installed an online backup system?

Something that's continually looking for changed files and automatically backing them up is a very likely culprit.

got it! (i think - so far so good)

not backup, but you got me thinking - the Anti Virus. I didn't think of it initially because I installed it months ago and it's been working fine. But it did expire recently as it was just a trial version... So, I've just un-installed it, and things seem to be working now.

Not really sure why it was locking up files after the trial ran out - theoretically if it's expired it shouldn't be checking anything...? but it was still running in the background so I guess it was just doing something odd. Anyway, I'll keep an eye on for the rest of the day... and if anyone gets the same error check the AV! (NOD in this case)

ps. it wasn't the backups. I disabled them all and then I manually added an order then it gave me the error as soon as I tried to open the order!

I guess we'll have to keep our eyes open for AV problems. These things are getting so complex and are pretty much inspecting everything that's happening on the PC now. I've told kasperski to leave Actinic alone but I'm still not really convinced it's doing what I tell it.

It definitely seems to have been the problem. Just weird that it worked fine until the licence expired...
