Upselling a new product

I'd like to upsell a product that's not avilable as a standalone item (we sell cycle clothing and want to offer customers branded water bottles). How do I create a product that can only be bought as an upsell.
As a side issue, is it possible to add this option just once - at the checkout stage - as opposed to creating a component for every item we sell?

You just have to make it an option for the product you're upselling it with.

You'll have to creat the component first and then select the 'hide on website' option so it can't be bought on it's own.
