Google +1 Button

I want to add the Google +1 button. The advice is to add a piece of html in the web page head or just before the body tag.

Assuming I want to add it to the home page (which seems the most logical place to put it), how and where do I insert the code. I'm a relative beginner at inserting code so a simple explanation will help me

You can get the code here. You can include it in a layout, or in a fragment text field surround it with !!< at the start and >!! at the end.
