Upload fails and Actinic hangs

Sounds like they are basically cautious about doing something which may cause problems with their server. (Although it won't! )

1. Don't use the admin username and password as apparently the ftp help file is only output during admin login.

Can you elaborate on this one? I'm not quite sure what it means. It seems to imply that one shouldn't FTP login as the admin user, though that isn't happening anyway.

This matched exactly what I was seeing with the protocol analyser, and that plus the RAQ connection made it seem like a good candidate for trying the fix.

PS. the proFTPD connection with Redspan sounds like it could be a common culprit.

The connection only seems to timeout on maybe 1 in 10 login attempts, so if the Actinic update/refresh didn't keep disconnecting and then logging in again then it wouldn't be nearly so bad a problem.

If you're on a cobalt RAQ, then you should be able to sort out the problem for you own site by yourself.

Login using an FTP client, and change to the following folder:
/users/username

Look for a file called .ftphelp and delete it.
(you man need to put -la or enable viewing of hidden files in your FTP client to see the file, depends on what FTP client you are using)

Try another upload.


If you create any more users in the future, and intend to use them in your Actinic network settings, you will need to do the same for them too.


(Tech aside: The mv command on the file in the /etc/skel folder just stops the RAQ from creating .ftphelp files every time you create a new user. There is nothing to stop users deleting their own .ftphelp files at any time. They are the same ownership permissions as the user.)

Thanks but please see my post earlier. The ISP has replied with this, "Unfortunately this does not seem to be the root of the problem in your case. We do not run RAQs for shared hosting and so the fix suggested here does not apply. However I will investigate more to see if there is anything related we can do, as we are running Proftpd as the FTP server and I believe most RAQs do the same."

Ah, my oversight. However, there would be no harm in seeing if you have any such file in your folders, the server may work in a similar way to RAQ's as the host said.

I am having the same problem with upload freezing.
I have also found that after closing Actinic (but without re-booting), I can no longer access the internet. Has anyone else found this?
I did a successful upload on a different computer, but on the same network. Maybe this was just a coincidence.
Is there an answer to this? I am afraid I am completely lost on the ftphelp thing.

I looked at my server today and noticed that it's also running proFTPD without any problems.

I wonder if it's a problem with proFTPD that's maybe been fixed sometime in the past? I've looked through the list of bug fixes in proFTPD and there are one or two that could potentially be the culprit. The problem is that the bugfix list isn't very specific so I can't say for sure.

My server's running proFTPD 1.2.9 (the latest release - 31/10/03).

I'd expect most hosts to keep their FTP software up to date though, but maybe that's why this problem is rare. It's easy to check the version your host has as it's displayed when you log-in to ftp.

Also answers to previous questions...

1. Could it have a few advanced user options for tweaking uploads;
e.g. Timeout settings, retry intervals, options for including/not including images with uploads.

2. Does the system employ resumable uploads?

3. Bandwidth throttling - ability to set a limit on amount of upload and download bandwidth Actinic uses.

4. Quiet uploads. i.e. no error messages or user interaction required. With the ability to have an upload activity log at the end.

The 'Enhanced FTP' function will be available in 6.1.5 (due in a couple of weeks) and v7.0.1 (due just after that).

I don't know exactly how it works, but I know it gives you a detailed FTP log for the problems it encounters.
