section list as tabs on all pages

I want to show my sections (5 of) as tabs (a la amazon) across the top of each page, and am trying to work out the best way to do this - as new button designs (allowing mouseover) or text in cells with background colour, and if so how to get the sections into alternate table cells.

I also want to show them on every page from index to catalog to sitemap etc.

This should be easy, but I can't see the wood for the trees today.

Any suggestions?

You will probably have to hard code the actual links, edit act_primary or Act-header (depending on theme) to get them on all pages

I was also hoping to be able to copy a lot of stuff from Act_Primary into Act_BrochurePrimary to get a consistent layout throughout the site, but I lose the 'your basket' and simple search if I do this.

Do you know of any way to get my brochure pages looking the same as the catalog pages in all bar the product lines?

you should be able to copy the simple search and basket code from act primary to act-brochure-primary. I think the code will work there!
