Is there any way that you can number the checkout pages eg step 1 of 4 ?

The templates that control the checkout are Act_Order00.html through Act_Order04.html - just hard code the text in there.

You can manually edit the HTML to show whatever you want in Act_Order0x.html where x takes the value 1 through to 4.

I am afraid Norman that I am a total novice to HTML and do not know where to start when editing text and templates.

You won't need HTML. Just put
at the very top of Act_Order00.html and see what happens. As the layout is dependent on the Theme you're using I can't be more specific.
Make a backup copy first just in case.
