sub section problems

i am trying to change my layout as i had to many sections on the first page of the catalogue. so i changed these sections to sub sections. i made 4 new sections with the appropiate sub sections under each section. so on the main page there are only 4 sections.
the problem being when i click on one of the sections in preview none of the sub sections appear. when i click on site map, all the subsections are there.
can anyone help
