one of every three attempts to add a product or go to checkout results in a general script error, the imput is null. anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?

It could be the server taking an unusually long time to respond. Ask your web host to increase the 'timeout' length for connections.
Is it possible for us to see a URL so we can check out the problem for ourselves? -
You should also use microsoft update to make sure you have the latest patches on IE. There was a problem a couple of months back that can cause this problem.
