    FTP timeout

    Hi all,

A client is having intermittent upload stoppages due, I think, to FTP timeout. I can't see an obvious way of adjusting the timeout period in the Actinic interface. I was wondering whether there might be a 'behind-the-scenes' method of doing so.

Also, does Actinic 7 address this?

    Thanks, Dan

Actinic FTP / upload does sometimes cause problems and is being re-written. here's what Chris Barling said in April:

-- The Actinic desktop to server communications will be over-hauled and the revised capabilities will be made available in both v6 and v7

    - This is a top priority for us, but it does involve an extensive re-write of the communications. It will be ready in weeks not months

    - We haven't changed this part of the product for a few years. At the time it was written, some quirky things were done to get around MS issues and restrictions of the time. These have largely gone away so some of our technology in this area is not appropriate - hence the decision to re-write

      Hi Dan,

Is your client going through a proxy server?

We are having problems in-house trying to upload & download and it is due to our proxy server. Using SSL through our proxy is even worse!

        Thanks for the reply,

No, he's not going through a proxy, and the hosting company say the server's OK. Could it just be network traffic between him, his ISP and the hosting company?

          Hi Dan,

It could be network traffic, connection speed, firewall settings or anything along those lines.

          Sorry its not much advice.

          Regards

            Who is the host??
We have the same problem using FastHosts, it usually means my site itself is down because the server is being rebooted or some other administration task which FastHosts do to their servers several times a day.
Its usually down for only about 10 minutes but often at peak times of the day
            Regards Steve

In our experience its a network traffic problem.
We were having a draedful time uploading between 12:00GMT and 16:00GMT, although our the problem has become less recently, possibly due to bandwidth improvements at our host (Claranet).

To test, try uploading late at night or early hours.
If it zooms through, then you have a fair idea its network traffic/bandwidth being stretched.

Agree totally with Fleetwood on this. We're also with Clara and uploading has improved a LOT in the last month or so. Still get the odd afternoon `cut-off` though. Not nearly as bad as it was.
