Custom Search Properties Duplicates

We have so many products to choose from now I'm setting up a more refined gift search page on wheesh.com so visitors can be more selective in gift choices.

I want to set up some drop down menus so people can choose from, eg

Price
Sex
Interests
Anniversary

This is fine using custom properties until we have a product which is suitable for male or female so we would want it included in results whether male or female had been selected . Actinic appears not to allow this as "Duplicate property name has been detected" is displayed if we try to add both male and female to custome properties.

Is there a workaround?

If you have a custom property named as "sex", and when you come to entering the property within each of the products, it should allow you to enter a text based value of male, female or say 'suitable for both sexes' - I would have thought.

Then, the product will have the custom property assigned it as per your needs for each product, and the custom search drop down should show each of the used custom properties, i.e. male, female or both sexes, or have I misunderstood
