    E-mail authentication

Having successfully upgraded to V7 (with some help from you lot!) I find the only thing not working is the 'contact us' button. A message says Error returned from SMTP server 4: authentication turned on in your client email account. I have done a test and the network settings are OK apparently. Any ideas (in novice terms again please)?

    Thanks

the error mesage means that your smtp server will only accept emails from scripts that know your username AND password.

Have you set up your V7 to use authenticated email? i.e. with username and password?

(I can't tell you how to do it as I don't have V7 installed at the moment)

If you go into Advanced / Network Setup and look in Email Settings you'll see a checkbox for Username and Password Required.

If you have a standard SMTP server (your hosting provider will be able to tell you this) try with this unchecked.

If you have to use an Authenticated SMTP server (your hosting provider will be able to tell you this) then try with it checked - in this case you need to enter a valid username and password for the Authenticated SMTP Server.

E-mails are now working but I'm getting two identical ones every time. I can live with this but is there anything obvious can be done to alter this?

          Thanks

Is this with test orders or all emails?

You could be getting two because 1 order confirmation goes to the customer and a copy could be sent to you if you've enabled 'send copy of receipt email to:' in business settings>ordering.

                Not working for me

                Hello everyone,

I have just upgraded to v7 and all seemed well until I tried to send emails using smtp authentication

Its the same as before with v6 and I hope it can be fixed because its the main reason I upgraded to v7. I had Normans email perl script running on v6 and im wondering if something has gone wrong in the upgrade process ?

I have ticked the password box and entered my correct username and password, then refreshed and reuploaded site.

Here is the error message for trying to send an email to a customer :

Failed to communicate with the SMTP server.

                Possible Cause:
                1. Network transmission problems.
                2. Could have Changed the SMTP Server settings, but not Uploaded after that.

                Recommendation:
                1. Retry
                2. Upload the Site First, if you have changed the SMTP Server Settings.

                Resolution:
If retry fails, check your SMTP settings
                or contact your ISP.

                The error was:
58319joebloggs@virgin.netError returned from SMTP server (1: Password:

                Command: send Filename:

And here is the error when testing email settings in Advanced / Network setup / Test :

The computer you specified as your mail server is not a valid mail (SMTP) server. Check the computer name or address and try again. If it fails again, then it is possible, you were locked out by a firewall program, or you don't have network connection to this server.

                Followed by :

                Actinic Mail Test completed successfully
                server: passed
                connection: passed
                sockets: passed
                communications: failed
                authorisation: failed
                message: Password:

And then I receive the test email correctly as it should be, but the customer email will not send at all ?

Any help would be great as im a bit gutted right now,

                Regards

                Mick
                Kind regards,

                  Hi,

I just tested in network settings with the username and password box unchecked and got this :

                  Actinic Mail Test completed successfully
                  server: passed
                  connection: passed
                  sockets: passed
                  communications: passed
                  authorisation: passed
                  message: -

Maybe if im sending email to myself from the same smtp server then I dont need authentication, but will definitely need it for my customers.

I think im more confused than ever now !

                  Mick
                  Kind regards,

                    More weird email issues

If I uncheck the password box I can now send shop emails to anyone with a btconnect email address but not outside of bt ?

                    Tearing my hair out now.

I assume you have set your bt (internet provider's) smtp server, not your hosting providers server. the BT server will be set so that it can only send email either from a BT address or to a BT address... if you are sending from a non-bt address to another non-bt address, it will be rejected.

I'd suggest you check your SMTP server address with your hosting provider.

I have now set up to use my hosting server as the smtp mail server and im getting this response "broken pipe" ?

What is your site address, hosting company and hosting company smtp server? Broken pipe messages could mean all sorts of things

                            Eureka

At long last its working !

In the end I had to use the actual machine address of my hosting companies server with all password check boxes unchecked, I cannot use my domain name as the mail server even though my hosting company insisted it would work.

Im ecstatic that its working after many months of doom and gloom but having password and user name turned off is rather confusing and counter-productive, especially in the fight against spam etc.

I cant believe its actually working with the authentication turned off as it defies everything I have been told in the past.

Nevermind, it works and its also using the correct 'from' address instead of putting the servers machine name in the 'from' address which looked very unprofessional.

                            Thanks for the help,
