    Real time stats

Yesterday I was looking at a TV on an electronics website (yes it was actinic!), and I phoned up to check it was in stock. I had already added it to the cart and when I phoned and asked if that model was in stock the guy on the phone said "oh, is that you on my website?"...

After I ordered the TV I asked what software he was using that would provide that kind of monitoring. He wasn't entirely sure what or how it worked as he'd had the site designed for him, but pointed me at the website 'tradedoubler.co.uk'.

I've visited the site but it is somewhat lacking in detail and the demo didn't work (doh).

Is anyone aware of this software? is anyone using it? how much does it cost? is it modular or do you have to buy the whole thing? what can it do? is it any good? is it easy to integrate into actinic?

The ability to see how many visitors are on the site, what they are looking at, what they are adding to their basket etc would be very useful...

    Hi,

We've looked into LivePerson for doing this before (http://www.liveperson.com/sb/) and it worked well. Don't know if this is what the site you visited is using (if you could provide a link it may help).
Anyway, you can get a free trial so give it a go.

    Cheers

wow, on paper that looks pretty good! but $99.00/month!? yikes

and when i tried to use their live chat button to ask if there was a cheaper option the pop-up said "Your request could not be completed due to internet connection problems. Please close this window and try again." not a great advert...

We trialled a similar service to LivePerson and so few people used it that it didn't justify any kind of cost. If you use it to approach people while browsing they are browsing your site it tends to put people off, bit like a pushy car salesman

          Hi,

I agree with Paragon, we only looked at using the service to track visitors behaviours rather than as a support/sales tool. I don't like pushy salespeople either

Perhaps it is a little expensive but it may be worth buying a couple of months just to get an idea of how to optimise your site for the typical visitor?

How about that link to the electronics site you visited jxm28788? It may be that they are using another service...

          Cheers

I'm only really intersted in the monitoring side, as I'm not around enough to talk to the customers!

The other site was http://discountaudiovision.co.uk/acatalog/ but he said they were using 'tradedoubler'

Steve - is that your site or did you just design it?

              Hi,

YourAromatherapy has just moved onto its second generation, its owned by a good friend but I was responsible for the original design and construction.
The new look graphics were done by a designer working for me but the hard work of getting everything together and working was done by the owner David Geran.
I really should take it off my signature as it looks like I'm taking more credit than is really due.

Lol, you also upgraded our Catalog V5 to Business V6 earlier this year so you can put the link back on your profile! We'll also want an upgrade to V7/8 soon after the Christmas shopping period if the Actinic techy boys (are the any girls in the office ) can answer the problems on thread http://community.actinic.com/showthread.php?t=8424.

                  Worth a look?

I've been looking at hosting packages and came across a live tracking/ chat feature on certain oneandone hosting packages (Business and above) have a look. Seems a good feature for support etc as I'm also against the hard sell approach.

I'm not a oneandone user but other features seem quite good (webstats, newslettertool, free scripts, web database, forum, webchat etc) and they have a promotion on at the moment.

I've been tempted to move to them and wonder if anyone can confirm the service and support from oneandone is good?

                  Thanks

                    1&1

I have several sites hosted at 1&1. They are more in the nature of hobby sites but the prices are very good.

However, they did a major upgrade a few months ago - without any notice. This included an upgrade to IIS which meant that you could not use the parent reference ..\. As a consequence my ASP pages could not access the database. This wen't undetected by me for some days.

At present I am delighted with their service - and cannot tell you how fed up I am with Claranet. I very much doubt I will stay with claranet - but will I move to 1&1? I don't know. I really don't like an ISP changing a basic configuration without telling me.

                    Hope this helps.

                      Thanks

Same dilemna for for me really. Currently with Claranet but looking for hosting on a couple of new sites so may go with 1and1 and try them out.

Claranet don't seem to have moved on to add the extras 1and1 have. Haven't had major problems with Claranet but 1and1 seems better value.

Don't wish to sound dumb, but as my website building experience is in the novice category, could you give me examples of what the asp issue could stop me from doing?

                      Ta

                        Iis

When the lovely Bill moved from IIS 5 to IIS 6 he set it so that
                        Enabling Parent Paths
Enabling parent paths specifies whether an ASP page allows paths relative to the current directory (using the ..\ notation). If set to true, this property constitutes a potential security risk, because an include path could access critical or confidential files outside the root directory of the application.

Parent paths are no longer enabled by default. This affects your application if it has a Web page that contains the #include server-side include directive and uses ".." notation to refer to a parent directory. Enabling parent paths corresponds to the metabase setting

                        http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...configasp.mspx
For a time it was normal to have a private folder on the same level as the www folder. The asp pages sat in the www folder and the database sat in private and the path was "..\private\mydb.mdb". The www folder would not allow anyone to write to it - but one needs to write to a database. Therefore the private folder required a password - but could be written to. ASP could handle this.

Most (?) ISPs (or at least 1&1) will not allow enable parent paths to be set. So slight problem.

                        Regards,

                            1&1

                            1&1 have done it again.

They make changes without warning. Unless you constantly monitor your site you will never know.

I have just discovered that they have changed permissions on a database. This means that a forum was working happily until one day - disaster.

Therefore, we are moving from Claranet - but not to 1&1.

Is this supposed to be realtime?

I have set this up on my site, I see the code in the page source in the browser, and it did work the first time I tried it. But it hasn't worked since...?

I'm wondering if there is a lag, or if it only updates every 30 mins or so?

The site has absolutely NO troubleshooting info at all. (or indeed ANY info)
