Poor response time when using UPS

Has anyone else encountered poor performance when using UPS? Without UPS, it takes about 4 seconds to add an item to the cart. With UPS, it takes 27 seconds. I had my site moved to my own server this week, so I tried UPS again. Although it's now better than 27 seconds, it is still way too long (about 15 seconds now). I've backed out UPS again because of this. My file is so large it takes forever to FTP a snapshot to the server to be looked at by US Actinic (Brian). I'm hoping soneone else has had this problem and knows exactly what needs to be done.

    Thanks!

Could you go to 'View | Business Settings | Ordering' and check whether 'Request Location Information Early' is selected. If it is, then de-select it.

If the 'Request Location Information Early' box is selected, the UPS server will be queried by Actinic when adding to cart. If it is not selected then UPS will only be contacted when you enter the checkout.

I don't see this field anywhere.

I found it -- it is grayed out, but not checked. But I am sure that the UPS database is being hit each time something is added to the cart. Otherwise what would explain the impact on response time?

I turned on the UPS stuff to see if that would give me access to this check box, but it didn't. Still grayed out.

Just fyi, I do not have the UPS stuff on right now, just in case you decide to tinker. I've manually created a shipping table. But I would like to use UPS if I can get beyond the response time issue.

It is greyed out because you are using a shopping mode other than 'Quantity in Confirmation Page' for at least one section in your store. That's fine.

I'm going to ask Brian Johnson to take a look at this thread and see if he can advise any further.

Apologies for the delay - I thought Brian was contacting you directly.

Could you confirm what shopping mode you are using. Are you using single add-to-cart buttons on your pages?

One add per page. I hope I'm using the right terminology. They can input the quantities for several items, and click only once for the entire page.
