    That darn Horizontal

Where the chuff is that darn Horizontal Line that seperates products?? It used to be 'separator' in V6 and I was able to add my own funky one easily but I can't find this little bugger anywhere! I'm using the Curves original templates and editing those.

Also, on the Brochure Layout there seems to be no seperators between products which seems a little odd? Any reason for that?

    Ta . .

Probably from the "product list with horizontal dividers" (depending on the layout in use) .. try in there first and then at the top of that layout the orange "edit layout list settings" .. if an original theme is is often from a nasty shim image and a class such as .product_line_dotted_blue (or words to that effect - I delete them so can't check back to the exact naming used)

Cheers Jont but I looked there first "product list with horizontal dividers" and couldn't see anything referring to those dividers? I want to use this one so I can match it up to my original design in V6:

Just loaded a clean Executive theme and it is there under the orange link ... edit rows and columns | middle row | after row

        <td class="dotted_line_blue" colspan="<actinic:variable name="ProductColumnCount" />"><img src="theme_shim.gif" height="1" width="1" alt=" " /></td>

Hi Jont, thanks for that. Sorry aboiut the delay but my PC died, I knocked over my LaCie 500gig and lost ALL my backed up stuff and then my laptop went mad on me!! Damn HP and the big processors in the Pavilion zd8000 . . seems I'm not the only one who's waranty has just lapsed and then the darn thing gets hot, shuts down and won't be reliable at conferences and classes I teach!!!

I have to now install the evaluation copy on the new PC I got built and then work out how to get what I edited so far from the V8 on another machine, guess it's best to copy and paste the code direct from one V8 I have edited, open it on the new PC and simply paste in the code. Reasoin I ask is cos the newer version will have a more up-2-date snapshot of newer products and orders etc.

                Thanks.

PS: Can anyone suggest anything to help with this HP zd8000? I can't even keep it on now for more than 20mins at a time and the batteries won't charge niehter! £1400 spend last Feb down the pan then..

                Cheers . .

Have you made sure the fan is still running? Sounds like processor overheat to me.

                    Hi Lee

Thanks. Yep, still running and I have checked around on line and it seems quite a few folks have lade same issues. Laptop gets around 18mnths old then goes just the same. Overheating and it cold shuts down too, no warning just clunk and off. I think one day it will go off and perhaps not come on again which is very distressing after forking out all that moola only a year or so ago.

I read on one site that someone suggested that the processors were too powerful/big for the machine and overheat easily. Even when the batteries are new they only last for 2 hrs max which I think (on reflection) says something about the usage of the machine. It's most annoying as of course, I knew nothing about this when I bought it thinking that the hi-end spec would last me at least 3 years with the ability to add stuff on.

It's a real pain as I have seminars/classes lined up tow3ards end of this year and I really need the laptop to be reliable and working for longer than an hour at a time! The is thing is, if I fire her up with the battery in and no DC, lety it run for a few mins until battery warning level comes on and THEN insert adapter, it will run longer than if I boot it up with the adapter in the start? It's as if there' some sort of charge firing across it .. could that be to do with a duff battery?

Would really appreciate any input on this as I don't want to give up on the beast yet, it's a beautiful bit of kit when it's working. Contacted HP but I don't think somehow they will come back with anything other than 'send it off to us'. Can't afford that in time or money right now.

                    Thanks

I'm no great experts on batteries and fans, but it sounds to me like the fan when brand new is running right on the limit of being able to keep things cool enough. As it gets a little less efficient and more importantly the innards get full of fluff and other crap, maybe that is just enough to overheat a little and swing the erratic performance. I would give it a good dusting down and run a conventional house fan on it while running and see if this alleviates the overheating. If it does then you know that your fan needs upgrading. Also make sure you are on flat solid surfaces, not quilts or carpets etc. these kill laptops IME.

As for battery life, i've had about 10 laptops, ranging from those that could run NASA (around 3k) down to 1k bog standard PC World jobbies and i would have to say if i ever got 2 hours out of any of them, i would be quite ecstatic to be honest. I work on the principle of a laptop giving me an hours hard work and then collapsing in a heap, a bit like the woman that does the office paperwork actually.

What these new quad processors are like, heaven knows, you probably need to buy a deep chested freezer (not secretary) to keep them buggers working.

Thanks Lee, brilliant advice and tips

I invented my own stand actually for the laptop on the back of a small MDF drawing board I have made for me and then, had a small fan under this too which seemed to help. I was even stupid enough (although hey, it worked great!) to take those freezer blocks you get for lunch boxes etc , wrapped them in tin foil and sat them under the propped up back end so they sucked in cool air! then I suddenly thought ooh.. maybe a little condensation there tho! :0

Think I will try to get the back off and see if I can't dust out them fans. I do try to hoover them out on a regular basis but it's almost impossible and as far as watching movies on the duvet . . well, I can't even sit it on the table flat, I always prop it up and even considered the stand and USB keyboard logitech make (which strangely, looks just looks my MDF set-up!) but I think I'd have to take the drill to it as it looks like the stand for the base has no holes to let the air circulate!

                        nice tho eh . .

That does look pretty nifty i must say. If all else fails Brian, sell the ruddy thing to Scott of Antarctica, it won't chuffing overheat there. And if it does, they can all sit round it like a fire. In fact maybe there is a new dual purpose for these laptops.
