variable for weight

is there a variable i can pick up that contains the weight assigned to a product

there's thisthread in v7

which indicates you can't in v7 but can we do this in 8?

I was making it too complicated... didn't look inthe obvious place, i was thrown but mention of the weight being i nthe cat files..
