Products on home page

I'm sure there must be answers to this somewhere, but I cannot find it/them.

1. What's the point of the 'use as website homepage' checkbox in the home brochure page. If I deselect it, this page is still used as the home page, even if I rename it from index.html to something else?

2. What's the best way to display products on the home page?

3. Can the catalog (shop.html) page be used as the index page?

1. Because all non-product pages are the same i.e. brochure pages, that tick box distinguishes that brochure page as the home and thus it is loaded to the root and not into acatalog folder as all the others are.

2. Fragments with links OR have the root home page on a permanent redirect using .htaccess to the shop home page, so your site starts on the shop page. (search forum for more info)
