Robert with little html and css knowledge you do not want to be trying things like this, don't try and run before you can walk, it's a battle you just can't win at this stage. If you are desperate for 3 columns, do yourself a favour and select one of the themes which has this already done for you. It will be infinitely easier. If you add a 3rd column you are going to run into css, html and width problems and you will be climbing a greased pole.
Not being funny but it is a case of "if you have to ask leave it alone" on 3 column layouts.. especially if you are going fully CSS. If you are using tables this is as simple as adding an extra table cell.. with CSS you get into a whole different dimension of issues (particularly with IE6) when using CSS layouts for the main products / sections lists etc.
