Related Products List in Products Section

I have searched all over and not found it, so I'm posting.

I have a hell of alot of products on my site and alot of related to each other, in the View Cart area it's fine, I restricted the amount to show to 5 products...but in the products section...it shows ALL of them and I can't change that. So I have like 21 related links on one product. What I wanna know is can I change that to work like the one in View Cart? so it picks 5 random ones out of the options?

    Thank you

    Tony

Good question, i have no idea on the answer though.
Do the 5 get selected randomly as you think OR is it far more rigid than that, first 5 in list, first 5 numerically on prodref etc or first 5 alphabetically etc.

I expect there is nothing random about it at all, probably as rigid as a rigid piece of rigid material.

I think it is random I will double check for you.

I doubt you could get a random selection to show on the product pages but can you use the ListIndex in a blockif to show a set amount (1-6 or whatever)?
21 relateds though..wow...that'd take some setting up in the first place in a whole catalogue!

the ones shown in the cart are set up differently and I think we did establish before (I remember asking the question myself on the forum) that they were randomly selected according to the products in the cart.

At product level though, I'm not sure you could replicate that

Yeah, that's just one product...and that related list ain't the largest either...some have 40 to 60 related to each other.... I always have a headache

I've editted my post to add a bit more about the cart selection vs product list

I see, thank you for the info. I will try a few things I have in mind and see what happens. If anyone else has an idea to I appreciate it.

Also this blockif and restrict the numbers showed, where and how would i put that?

                  Hi

I was checking with development if this can be done and I'm afraid they have come back to me saying that this is one for the wishlist, because the only way to get fever links appearing in the related products list is by trimming it.

                  Kind Regards

I hate to disagree with development but it is possible to show fewer related products on the product pages by using the listindex in a condition.

The problem I'm finding (I was testing it so I could give an accurate method) is that you could end up with empty cells where the "hidden" products are, depending on your set up in the Related product list layout settings.
I'm noticing it mostly because I have a background colour behind my related products boxes but it's possible it wouldn't cause a problem depending on your layout etc

                    anyway.. as a test...try this

In your product layout locate your related products layout and double click on it to open that layout.

This should display your list layout (orange text) and, most likely, another layout in pink?

Highlight it (or the complete contents of this layout), right click and "insert block"

In the condition editor, add the condition ListIndex (start typing it and select from dropdown so it uses the variable (in blue)) <=5

                    It should look like

                    ListIndex <=5

                    then press ok

for me, this does limited the number of related products shown but, as I said, I am getting empty cells.

It's possible that using this condition inside the list layout settings somewhere might eliminate them? I don't really have time to play and find out.
