If you are referring to a site counter then I wouldn't recommend it. If you want to see the number of visitors to your site pages then rather look at your hosting site logs or/and add Google Analytics. I doubt your customers are interested in the number of visitors.
There is code available on the interweb which will do this for you (and for free) ... this is really outdated these days as it looks bad form. The visitors do not care or assume it is a lie if very high .. if very low they could equally think this is a naff site nobody is on it lets move on elsewhere.
You raw site stats should show the number of unique visitors per hour of each day in a nice graph ... whilst not a live report it does show trends in daily visits, peak viewing times etc ... which is handy for co-ordinating uploads at quiet periods of the day.
If this is just for your benefit, why not install a little bit of software called phplive ( http://www.phplivesupport.com/ ) i use it on a couple of sites, the benefits is not only can you offer live chat support you can constantly monitor your site in real time and see exactly were visitors are on your site, what search term they came to your site using and their exit page (even when your live chat person is in the "Offline" status)
other than that as mentioned above google analytics is very important.
