Cart info not being removed when copy is made

When I go into the library and create a copy of an existing layout so that I can remove the Shopping Cart info so it doesn't appear on the checkout pages, it removes it from the original also. How can I stop this from happening?

Create a new layout for the checkout pages

If i create a completely new layout, it does not recognise this in the drop down list in Site Options - Layouts. I could probably import a new one from DW but I don't wont to do this.

Add it to the selector, otherwise it won't show.
