Navigation rules - 3 clicks to the Home Page?

As a newbie I'm not sure this is something that the forum can help with as it's not really a technical issue - but I'll ask and see what comes back. I am looking for some feedback on my site as I'm making some changes.

I have upgraded to V9 and am making some changes to my navigation. As I start to sell more products and create more sections I am looking to amalgamate several of my product section navigation links into one section head. For instance, I now have Energy Saving Devices at the top of the list, but this is actually 4 previous sections that I have moved into one (you can see I have kept the 4 sections in the main list to compare which is easier to navigate: Batteries, Energy Monitoring, Light Bulbs and Energy Saving Devices. these will be deleted afterwards).

I read sometime ago, if I remember rightly, that you should always keep your products within 3 clicks of the home page - hence I'm concerned I'm getting a bit far away from that. I know where I am, but then again I know my site and the products in it, but a newcomer to my site doesn't - hence it would be useful to know what someone looking at the site for the first time thought from a fresh perspective. Is the navigation clear? I am looking to have more information on the products, which is why I am moving away from using the extended details section, and will only use that for a larger picture of the item.

Does anyone know of any unwritten 'rules' to governing navigation of products - or any feedback on whether the navigation is clear or too complicated?

    Many thanks for any advice,
    Dorian.

p.s. I know that some of my About Us pages haven't imported properly into V9 - I am (still) waiting to hear back from Actinic why not.

3 clicks used to be the mantra of site navigation and to a certain extent you should try and maintain it but as sites become bigger it is almost impossible to achieve.

If your site is constructed well ie SPP then its unlikely that viewers will have a problem as they will land on the page they are looking for rather than having to navigate from the homepage which is where the 3 clicks ideal came from.

Your site will benifit hugely from SPP and as long as you try to keep the navigation as short in terms of click as you can then I dont think you will have too many problems.

      Many thanks Mal,

Forgive my ignorance - you mention 'constructed well in SPP' - what is SPP? Is that like SEO (search engine optimization)?

      Cheers,
      Dorian.

SSP - Single Product per Page. Or in Actinic terms - only having one product in a Section. This generally better for SEO and means that your visitors would more likely land on the product page and be able to buy with one click.

As Duncan explained and an example here http://www.cheapmowers.com/acatalog/...e_Washers.html or http://www.affordablegroup.co.uk/aca...are_Range.html (under construction)

And another example here that may be considered more pleasing to the eye.
