Drop down permutations with image

Hi,

I would like to be able to display an image beside the permutation dropdown lists on some of my products that would change dependant upon the currently selected permutation.

The question would be, is this possible and if so how ?

I have tried to search for a solution, I did find the item for displaying images in the grid layout using a custom variable but I'm afraid I do not where to start to try and modify it for my little problem.

Any help and/or direction would be gratefully received .....
