David - can post post exactly what it is you are wanting to achieve. Forget what you have done and all the technical stuff ... can you just describe what effect you are wanting on the page.

      Dear Jont,

      Thanks for keeping with me.

The store will have5000 products, which are laid out in sections according to product type. So for example on my current v7 site.

products are for applique, but on the new v9 site I would like a brands area as well. So for example there would be a Clover brand for the first item. What I was trying to avoid was duplicating a 1000 products in the site. Which I know would in theory be the simplest scenario as pointed out by Lee earlier.

From reading through the posts and advice I thought that I could create a page for the clover brand with a list 3 columns wide which was filled with brief product details that link through to the full product. This list would be filled by meeting the criteria of a custom variable that stated the brand. So far I have created the list ok but I can't work out the formating of it to get it 3 columns wide in the brand page.
      Hope that is clearer?

If you have successfully created the list of products filtered by the brands all you need to do to have 3 columns wide is to click on the section, switch to the layout tab and under "product" set the "column count for product" to 3

If you want a fragment to span the 3 columns you need to create a new fragment layout setting the colspan to sit over the 3 columns. This has been covered in detail previously.
