    Exporting custom layouts - v8

I have a number of sites ( all in Business Multi-user 8.5.1.0.0.0.HFUA ) which all contain the same products at the same base prices. The sites use different colour schemes and graphics / some need logins / some have different discount structures, all set up for our large corporate customers who wanted their version of our shop to fit with their corporate image.

I designed two new CUSTOM layouts for a particular section and subsections in "site 1" which I'd like to apply to the same section and subsections in "site 2".

So I used "Design / Deploy Partial Site Design" to export just the two custom layouts in the "Product" section from "site 1", and import these into "site 2". Then I discovered you also need to make sure they're available in the product layout tab by going to "Design / Design Library / Products / ProductLayout / Values" and moving the new layouts across to the right hand box.

The layouts are now installed fine, and I can MANUALLY change the product layouts in "site 2" ... but that's time consuming, so I then CUT the old-style section from "site 2" and tried copying and pasting the new-style section from "site1" into "site 2". As soon as I look at a product in the newly pasted section in "site 2", Actinic crashes.

I tried all this in v9 as well, and whilst Actinic doesn't crash, all the subsections and products in the newly pasted section revert to "Use parent" and again I have to manually amend the layout of every single subsection and product.

Surely if I copy a subsection from one site into another site, and both sites have exactly the same layout available, the second site should just work ?

    Any ideas gratefully received !

Very recent posts on this subject - cutting and pasting between sites is not supported in V8 & 9

Partial designs exports in v8 were the biggest red herring since the Pasta Tree. Avoid in v8 at all costs. Copy and Paste code via Notepad is the safest option by far. v9 is almost perfect by comparison.

If you code everything via CSS you can quickly make changes to an external stylesheet to lay the design as required.
