I'm not sure if I understand correctly but I think it's dynamic ... i.e it will extend as much as you put in it. Therefore if some of your section pages are longer than your home page say, the side bar will end where your homepage ends. Not sure that's clear but I know what I mean! In otherwords put more in it and it will get longer. D
This is a common 'problem' with a css layout, tbh.
You 'could' get around it by using tables instead but it's something of a step backwards nowadays (plus various forumites would hang, draw and quarter you LOL )
It is an issue for sure, a very frustrating one. You need a setup ideally where you can always guarantee which column, either sidebars or central column will be longest. Say for example the middle column is always longest, then you would add the background colour that you wanted in the sidebars to be the background colour of the outer wrapper. You would then set the bg color of the central column to be white and your sidebars to be your chosen colour. This way when your sidebar content runs out, the bg color of the outer wrapper shows through instead appearing seamless.
ARGHHHH that makes no sense when i read it myself, i knew i should have kept stum!
