Component layout problem.

I have a problem in the component layout options-
the check boxes in the permutation layout options group are all "greyed out" I have looked in various settings & changed options that might help, Help does not help, nether can I find anything on the Knowledge base.
Baffled- has anyone else had this happen and cured it?

I think I may be on the track of what I'm doing wrong here, I don't think I have fully understood using components, attributes and permutations. Back to the help files to RTFM again.
