styling the error message's within the checkout pages

i'm asking the same question as here - http://community.actinic.com/showthread.php?t=33383 - because the answer wasn't on the thread.

i'd like to style the error messages within the shopping cart. i want to style the layout not just the text.

can anyone tell me where the layout / code is,

thanks for posting the solution. in future bear in mind it is better to add further questions to the end of the relevant thread rather than create a new one. It helps future searches.
