The difficulty there is, the customer uses lots of different image sizes in each section, so setting a width for either of those columns meant sometimes the image would be too large for a 30% width, and sometimes far too small - meaning lots of nasty white space.

sites with uniform image sizes are far preferable, a) it adds consistency to the design and layout b) it adds consistency to potential purchasers experience.The site is huuuuge and I can't see them being in a position to set a uniform size to all the images.
Use a batch program to resize...
