the discount i am using is on cart contents (restricted to certain product groups)

I'm not clear as to how you're doing this.

It would probably take me ages to set up a system exactly as yours is so I'm afraid I'll have to give up on this. Best restore ActiniOrder.pm to it's original state and remove the code that's in post #3.

i fully understand Norman, what you ahve given me so far is great.

It only gets it wrong when you get to £200 then you get your 5% discount which brings it down to £190 - the band does not show although you are getting discount. The only way around this is to use both the sub total and the discount added together to control the bands however this is way past me
