How Important is the DOCTYPE Phrase

Running V11.0.2. Before the <Head> I have:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

I see other websites have many variations in this area. Could I improve on this to give a better browser response? Many thanks.

The doctype states the version of HTML used and if adhering to W3C guidelines the code should use tags allowed for the doctype.
