    Shared SSL

Apologies if this is a daft question but....

I got my letter from Actinic saying Shared SSL cannot continue and will be switched off etc due to PCI regulations. The letter then goes on to recommend the Actinic Payment Service, but if I'm 'happy' for the moment with PayPal, don't I just need to find another SSL privoder or certificate or something to replace the Actinic Shared SSL Service ?

It depends. Are you just using regular Paypal or Paypal Pro?

For regular paypal, you don't need any SSL,

For Paypal Pro you really need to find another payment method as Paypal Pro isn't going to be PCI compliant.

Have a look at actinic payments as an alternative then, you really want to drop paypal pro, should have some 18 months ago in reality. Have normal paypal as a second payment option.

There are a couple of reasons for having Actinic Payments (AP) as well as Paypal:

          - Cost. Once you have a reasonable order flow, the cost of AP plus your merchant account charges should be less than Paypal

          - Security. If you have an outage with either payment system, or even if your Paypal account was frozen for whatever reason, your web site can keep going.

Paypal is a great payment method to get started with. I would also always recommend that anyone who sells to consumers accepts Paypal on their site. If you won't save money adding AP to Paypal, it's probably best to leave until you will.

            OP uses PayPalPro.

so yes paypal website payments(possibly express too but i dont know the cost/charges for this - can you have express standalone?) is a great way to take credit cards without incurring the set up costs of a PSP (AP inc) PPP is not a good startup solution as you have to pay for SSL too.
