SSL in checkout

We've had a few problems with people apparently getting erroneous warnings about our certificate etc when running with SSL in checkout ticked, so we've decided to try it without SSL ticked for a couple of weeks to see what happens.

Will people still get messages because the SSL certificate is still installed on the server, or will the lack of any https on the site mean that broswers ignore the certificate??

PS there's nothing wrong with the certificate as far as we know.
