We are having trouble getting our site shown in Googles natural's listings.
We are using v7 business with the Smart theme, could this be an issue?
We are listed in Yahoo & MSN.

I don't think there is a worse combination, get yourself upgraded to version 9 and stop using the smart theme. Lots of info about this combination already on the forum, especially regarding cgi-bin links. You need to be looking at converting to Single Product per Page (SPP) setup too and make your site look more appealing to your marketplace. It's one thing getting them there, it's another keeping them there. I have little idea on what your site does when i arrive.

Time for a bit of a rethink, have a look at the successful sites in your industry, note how many things they will be doing differently to you. Good news is that your product info (the time consuming part) looks OK .

Lees' advice is sound, but if you really don't want to spend the money and effort on V9, you can do better by switching to a standard V7 layout and converting to Single Product per Page.

Two quick things to improve:
1. Use a header image with you shop logo and tagline instead of the default "Online Store"
2. Presumably, you are doing the Top Sellers by hand as its not a feature of V7. You should modify them to be links to the product pages, so when customers see something of interest, they can go straight to it.

Ann - I would have a go at submitting feeds to Google Base - this is a good (free) way of appearing near the top of the list for specialised products.

With regards to single product per page is this a standard feature in V7 or is it something I have to "create" myself?

Something you will need to create.
It just involves having just one product in each section (page).

3 make sure your product descriptions contain your key phrases and your page title too

4 submit sitemap to google (and Yahoo)
5 submit googlebase feed

As a simpleton may I ask just which are the 'standard layouts' - I would have thought any layout supplied in the program 'ought' to be called 'standard'. I can't see any in the layout section called 'standard'. A clue please.

there is no theme called standard. the clean layouts are probably the better ones, a css one is the holy grail

Smart theme is the one theme that produces code that search engines find hard to negotiate

Hi

Thanks you all for your advice. Have changed our site to the Single Page Layout and changed the Theme.
Submited sitemaps and google base feed.
Just going over through the product information. Have been reading information about keywords and meta tags etc. Some saying that keywords are not as important as the Page Title.

Any view on this? Just seeing if it worth spending hours inputing keywords if there are "ignored" or just add small selection, and spend more them writing page title's instead.

you might want to consider getting someone to do your site for you or buying a theme / set of templates. Teclan have a large amount here http://www.teclan.com/acatalog/Actinic_Themes.html you will also find some great designs from memebers here, Lee & Jont are definately worth looking at, although i would recommend you upgrade as there are some new themes and other features in v9.
