In terms of the products on the homepage, I generated these automatically from the 'new product listing' option from <marketing>.

Is there a way for the automated 'new product listing' option to do this automatically somehow ? Thanks,

Like Mark says, hard code them. These are important bits of your home page and it's worth spending a bit of time and effort on it.

There has been some discusion on automating it but it isn't easy and also takes a bit of time. See http://community.actinic.com/showthread.php?t=32892
