HT Access Question & Help

I'm considering changing my online store folder from acatalog to something more descriptive. Our site's been live for several years and has established positions in Google which I'd like to retain. I've seen a post on the forum which seems to suggest that one can use the ht access file to implement a single, global change to redirect links which use the old folder to the new one rather than setting one rule up for each page. The post I've seen is here:

Can anyone confirm if this is possible, and if so what I'd need to add to my ht access file to make the change? I have already set up other rules in my ht access file so am aware that I need to get it right first time!

It is a 301 redirect from old folder to new folder. Rename to use your own domain name and store folder.

The code I already have in the ht access file is a redirect from non www to www. I assume the new code should go after this as it's secondary in terms of importance. I'll try the code and confirm when done.

Update: used the code referenced in post #1 with our own domain details, and changed the online shop name in network settings. Navigating from old links on Google instantly changes to the new path so hopefully no loss of rankings. Will see if the new shop name makes any difference. Thanks again Louise for your help.

Further to this, we always suggest removing this sub directory completely since it leads to an incorrect interpretation of importance when it comes to the pages contained in it and convolutes the URL.

The process is a little tricky but happy to help for anyone interested.
