Shipping By Postcode

I know this has been discussed elsewhere but at a time when I suspect a lot of us are under pressure from rising costs not least of shipping I am looking for a solution.

Actinic is very clumsy in this respect and the drop down at the first page of doesn't allow one much scope.

How about being able to enter a postcode manually (as Text rather than a drop down) at this stage and the shipping table being posted the first 3 (better still 3 / 4) characters of the postcode.

That way we could create a relatively fine grained shipping table without having to arbitrarily regionalise the UK. It would also possibly appear to be less discriminatory to those who live in the "Highlands & Islands" etc.

A further development of this idea could also post to the Post Code field in the name and address form.

Perhaps someone with better perl/php skills than I can suggest an answer?

Just wondered if you have had any response from this post - i am also looking for an integrated postcode/shipping costing solution for actinic.

Would make a great add on for any actinic developers out there looking to make some money!

Add something to the cart, then proceed to the checkout.
It uses javascript arrays prepopulated with the postcodes and the equivalent delivery cost for these areas e.g. it sets all highland Postcodes in one "shipping" charge band and so on.
This gives the impression of shipping calculated on the fly from the postcode, when in fact it is just some javascript filtering based on entered values.

Is this the kind of thing you are after or is it something more directly integrated into the shipping and handling fields within the Business settings in Actinic?

yeah thats the kind of thing we are looking for - although ideally integrated within the actinic shopping cart address section as the customer enters shipping address the scripyt grabs the postcode and applies the appropriate shipping costs - always wondered why this wasnt part of version 9.

anyway is this a script you could give me a quote for?

I could be very interested in this if it can be made workable - I have tried to use 'shipping' but haven't been able to make it precise enough to cover the relevant costs. So we calculate shipping AFTER the order has been placed, and this does upset some people.

My biggest bugbear in this area, and with Actinic, is the Channel Islands, using RM, FCP, at a cost per exact weight - it gets pricey. But it also applies to Offshore Islands and Northern Ireland where CityLink incurs an 'overwater' surcharge.

My parcels can be anything from virtually no weight to a pallet; RM charges by actual weight whereas CLink is 'up to 20kg then so much per extra kg.' - then plus the s/c for certain postcodes.

To complicate the issue, we also have to contend with 'VAT by delivery address' and I'd be happy to stump up a substantial three-figure sum (multiplied by - or a four-figure sum shared with) like-minded souls - for a developer to get this idea working.

BTW, entering my postcode (south of Bolton) brought up a conflicting message - delivery was LESS than stated. (£55 instead of the standard £69 - WTF?)

Mine is relatively simple

I have 4 shipping catagories and 4 shipping zones. So the products define which catagory they fall into then i need it to work out which zone they are in

Hey Darren,
Not MIA - just very busy recently!

This javascript shipping method in the above example was not written directly by teclan, however we have the in-house skills to develop this, and other javascript based add-ons to Actinic.

To reiterate, in this example, all that is actually happening is that a shipping method pre-defined in Actinic (i.e. that would otherwise appear in a drop down) is being dynamically chosen and selected based on the postcode that the person enters.

There is a basic javascript array of postcodes with their respective delivery class/charge which is used to control which postcode selects which method.

It could be adapted to a degree to be shopping cart value/amount dependant, as well as post codes, however what you are after Paul would be more complex than that I would imagine after my initial reading of your requirements.
