Recording sales/item numbers

In the website I am building, each product will have a unique identifying number, which I use in my own records. Is there anywhere I can store these numbers in Catalog, to avoid having to cross reference an item to an number manually, every time I make a sale?

In the business settings, under options, uncheck Auto Generate Product References and set the character count. The you use your own number as the reference for each product.
