    Demon

I'm afraid I am getting in a right pickle with the Demon network settings when using SSL.

I have previously had my site working with no problems without SSL turned on and with the perl scripts running in the docroot directory.

When I try and get Actinic to automatically do the settings via the wizard it gives an error that the SSL certificate does not match the site name, which is to be expected as I'm on a shared server. Actinics site says to accept the sites certificate in IE and then try again, unfortunately this still gives me the same error.

If anyone else is using Demons Advanced Web Hosting Package sucessfully I would be obliged if you could post the settings you have.

    Hi there

SSL certificate does not match the site name
You need the SSL certificate to match the server name, Even if its on the shared server, the certificate has to be on the shared server name. Otherwise it will not work.

Thank you for that, I didn't realise in the first place that the website address was something else for the secure server, which is shared.

Each time i try using the wizard I get an error message when it starts to log into the secure server and Actinic crashes out to the desktop. The error is here

When I try to do the network settings manually it won't work, I use the following settings:

      Standard
      Catalog URL: http://www.dufexcrafts.co.uk/acatalog/
      CGI-BIN URL: http://www.dufexcrafts.co.uk/
      Codebase: ./
Path from CGI-BIN to acatalog directory: ../docroot/acatalog/
      FTP Path to CGI-BIN: /docroot/
FTP Path from CGI-BIN to acatalog: ../docroot/acatalog/

      SSL
      Catalog URL: https://secure.demonweb.co.uk/mbradley/acatalog/
      CGI-BIN URL: https://secure.demonweb.co.uk/
      Codebase: ./
Path from CGI-BIN to acatalog directory: ../secure/acatalog/
      FTP Path to CGI-BIN: /docroot/
FTP Path from CGI-BIN to acatalog: ../secure/acatalog/

Actinic doesn't seem to be happy uploading the necessary files to the secure acatalog directory such as the gifs for the buttons etc.

        Hi there

One thing is that the insecure and secure cgi-bin url is not correct:

        CGI-BIN URL: http://www.dufexcrafts.co.uk/ should be:
        CGI-BIN URL: http://www.dufexcrafts.co.uk/cgi-bin/

        and

        CGI-BIN URL: https://secure.demonweb.co.uk/ should be:
        CGI-BIN URL: https://secure.demonweb.co.uk/cgi-bin/

          Sorry it's me again

I have made some progress with your kind help Nadeem.

I can now use the whole site through adding to basket, checkout and even get the email sent

Now my Network settings are as follows Standard and the SSL settings

The problem I have is when I go to the secure screens the scripts works just fine but the various image files don't show, see here as an example. I have changed the path from CGI-BIN to acatalog in the SSL screen to ../../secure/acatalog and ../secure/acatalog but then my scripts stop working.

            Hi there

The missing images are because actinic is trying to find these images from "https://secure.demonweb.co.uk/mbradley/acatalog/". Now there is nothing here, what you hosting company will need to do, is to setup a symbolic link between the insecure /acatalog/ and the secure /acatalog/ folder. What this means is that anything that gets uploaded to the insecure /acatalog/ folder, will already be see in the secure /acatalog/ folder.

Setting up this link should solve your problem.

I have just spoken to Demon support and they have told me the reason why Actinic isn't working is because one of cgi scripts tries to contact the actinic server which isn't possible through their firewalls. Surely this shouldn't give me the problems that I'm seeing here though?

                Hi there

By the sounds of it it, the way it is setup it wont work with Actinic, sometimes the server cannot be setup in the way that Actinic needs for it to work.

One suggestion would be to show Demon our SSL setup document, which you can get here!

Otherwise, you may need to look to another hosting company to host your site in this way.

Yep thanks for your help. Unfortunately they will not set up the symbolic links between client folders in the two directories on shared hosting machines, cos otherwise how would they sell their dedicated servers

I will use the work around of just having the *.gif, *.js and *.css files uploaded to the secure acatalog directory for the time being. I may well reconsider and use the Actinic SSL as price wise there is no difference.

The reason I chose Demon is they are our current ISP and I can't fault their service, always been top notch and I have only actually heard of Claranet out of the list of your ecommerce hosting partners and was a very reluctant to go for someone I didn't know.

                    Hi there

Have you seen this list on our website, these are all hosting companies that we recomend, and who also have plenty of Actinic users hosted on their servers.
