Hi. I've tried all sorts of variations of force9.net, none of them make any difference. I've also spoken to forc9 loads of times to no avail. It should work!

But the funny thing is when I try with a different SMTP name, from my other completely different e-mail account/domain name, it still doesn't work in exactely the same way??

I've read a few forums about force9 and people can't get it to work. But that doesn't mean it's not possible. However, I'm pretty fed-up!

    Any more ideas??

    Cheers,
    Matt

Hi Richard. Yes I have tried that, and I get the same message as usual. Which is...
"The computer you specified as your mail server is not a valid mail (SMTP) server. Check the computer name or address and try again. If it fails again, then it is possible, you were locked out by a firewall program, or you don't have network connection to this server."

Do you use force9?? Does anyone here use Force9?

        Cheers,
        Matt

I suspect that the problem is that force9 is blocking smtp access from their servers. Either using a firewall or only allowing access from via their own dial up / broadband connections. (ends up being the same thing really)

Are you using force9 as your ISP as well as web hosting or just for the hosting? Either way, if you search for force9 on this forum you'll see that others have tried and failed at this.

Hi. Yes I have searched the forum and not had any good news!
Force9 host my site and email etc. And I can only dial up through their connection. so I think you're right, there must be some sort of block or firewall preventing Actinic using my e-mail.
However, Force9 say there should be no problem!
I don't really want to move to another ISP, but it's looking like I may have to.
I'm only on dial up, which is fine for me as I use my computer (laptop) at work just as much as I do at home. And force9 give me loads of minutes to use for dialing up. So I never have to pay for a phone bill.

            Cheers,
            Matt

hummm, I've just heard back from force9 and they confirm that there is no firewall or any other blocking thing.
Are any of you sure I could not have some other setting set wrong in Actinic??? Well, not wrong, but needs changing??
It's onlt the e-mail bit that doesn't work./ I've done a couple of items in my Actinic shop and the whole process works fine, it just doesn't send me or the customer an e-mail.
Is there a way of doing this manualy?

              Cheers,
              Matt

There is a patch that Norman Rouxel developed for V6 and it reportedly works with V7. A search for 'sendmail patch' should throw up the relevant posts.

Personally, I would switch to another host that works properly with actinic. Good, quality hosting is now so cheap and widely available that I can't think of a good reason to stick with a host that makes life difficult for you. (In this case, strange network settings that the actinic network wizard can't support and no way to access smtp - the two may be related)

Wanadoo and AOL are the same. I get people to use BT, they never have anymore problems.

mattsavage i have the same SMTP problem !

I am going mad with what seems to be the same SMTP problem. My isp is actualy plusnet and i can confirm that typing 'relay.plus.net' into advanced network setup does not work. Ive tried all suggestions. I have been on the phone with actinic support and my web hosting support... they both say it must be the ISP. But when i phone the ISP (plus net) they say its not ! Plus net have told me that their relay server does not require any special authentication for ssl etc... And this seems to ring true because the same smtp details work in my outlook express BUT NOT IN ACTINIC !
So for now i cannot send any email invoices via Actinic, very annoying.
Have u found a solution yet?

                        Karina,

Who is your web host? Do they provide a mail service? The SMTP setting should be an account on your web server and totally independent of who your ISP (connection) provider is.

If you have webhost provided mail, it is usually in the form of username@mydomain.co.uk and the SMTP setting would be mail.mydomain.co.uk or smtp.mydomain.co.uk.

A shortcut which is often successful is just to use "localhost" - without the quotation marks - in the SMTP box.

                          smtp

                          Hi
Yes i have webhost provided mail. I use info@coconut-hut.co.uk and the settings work fine in outlook express just not in actinic. In outlook express i put relay.plus.net as my smtp.
Ive tried smtp.coconut-hut.co.uk and 'localhost' and many other variations but connection always refused. I get the message 'The computer you specified as your mail server is not a valid mail (smtp) server. Check the computer name or address and try again'. I then get:
                          server: passed
                          connection: failed
                          sockets: passed
                          communications: failed
                          authorisation: failed
                          message: connection refused

Outlook express is running on your desktop computer, Actinic is sending mail from your website - they are completely different.

When you tried smpt.coconut-hut.co.uk, did you have username and password empty and the username and password required NOT ticked? If so, tick the box and put in a username / password pair. If it was ticked, try clearing the tick.

Does your webhost also refer to the mailbox as a number (something like m3456545@coco...uk)?

If that does not work, try the same two combinations with mail.coconut-hut.co.uk and see if either work.

You could also examine the headers on an incoming and outgoing mail using the info address, in outlook to see how the address is formed there.

I am having the same problem, I use oneandone.co.uk and it always comes back
'The computer you specified as your mail server is not a valid mail (smtp) server. Check the computer name or address and try again'.

                              I then get:
                              server: passed
                              connection: passed
                              sockets: passed
                              communications: failed
                              authorisation: failed
                              message: connection refused

I have tried all the ideas on this thread, but no success. I know some other people with oneandone, Ideas please, I am new to Actinic and online shopping authouring, (3 days). So any other help would be greatly appreciated.
