I can tell you that the link Bill pointed me to was very useful. I've had hotlinking happen on a site I developed in the past and it was leeching a fair amount of bandwith. On that occasion I was lucky enough that they stopped when I sent them a polite email telling them I had discovered what they were doing, but this time round I'd rather not take the chance.
